Sushumna – सुषुम्णा

Central subtle channel running along the spine from Muladhara to Sahasrara, pivotal for Kundalini awakening (spiritual awakening).

Sushumna is considered the most important nadi, as it is the pathway through which Kundalini energy ascends when awakened. It connects the base chakra (Muladhara) to the crown chakra (Sahasrara), traversing all intermediate chakras, and representing the axis of spiritual transformation. It serves as the primary conduit for awakened Kundalini energy, enabling the ascent of consciousness. It is often described as the most crucial nadi among all, through which enlightenment is attained.

In yogic practice, the goal is to purify and activate Sushumna through breath control (pranayama), bandhas, and meditation. Once unblocked, it allows the Kundalini shakti to rise smoothly, passing through the seven major chakras and culminating in self-realization. The central channel is thus the highway of spiritual transformation.

Ida Nadi – इडा

Left lunar channel with cooling, introspective, and the parasympathetic nervous system qualities.

Ida begins at the Muladhara chakra, winding upward through the chakras, and exits through the left nostril, bringing calm, introspective, and is associated with moon-like, feminine energy. It corresponds to the Ganges river, emphasizing tranquility, introspection, moon-like qualities—cooling and soothing.

In yogic physiology, balancing Ida is essential for mental steadiness and relaxation. Over-dominance can cause lethargy, while blockage may lead to restlessness or insomnia. Practices such as left-nostril breathing (chandra-nadi shodhana) support its smooth flow and mental equilibrium. When balanced, Ida induces calm, restful states and intuitive thinking. Techniques like alternate breathing and Ida-focused pranayama help soothe the mind, whereas imbalance can result in lethargy or mental sluggishness.

Pingala Nadi – पिङ्गल

Right solar channel with heating, active energy, and the sympathetic nervous system activation.

Emerging from the root chakra and ascending to the right nostril, Pingala arises alongside Ida, running to the right nostril and embodying sun-like, masculine energy. It corresponds to the Yamuna river and energizes action and perception. It mirrors the Ida, but with warming, stimulating qualities tied to the rise in bodily metabolism. In energetic terms, Pingala drives dynamic action and vitality. When imbalanced, it can lead to stress, anxiety, or excess physical drive. Balancing it via right-nostril breathing and cooling practices supports clarity, motivation, and physical resilience.

When balanced, Pingala supports vitality, focus, and physical dynamism. Pranayama like Surya Bhedana (right-nostril breathing) stimulates it, but excess can lead to agitation or stress.

Gandhari Nadi – गन्धानरी

Subtle channel aligned with the left eye, linked to intuitive vision/perception.

Gandhari is one of the seven subsidiary nadis mentioned aside from the primary three. It is said to travel from the Ajna region to the left eye, enhancing inner perception - facilitating intuitive insight and inner vision. It forms part of the network of lateral nadis branching from the central system.

Clearing Gandhari strengthens intuitive foresight and the ability to perceive subtle impressions. Meditative eye-focus exercises like tratak help to illuminate this channel and deepen perceptivity. When Gandharī is clear, practitioners experience enhanced inner sight, intuitive clarity, and a deep sense of connection to subtle impressions. Yoga techniques like trataka (candle gazing) and focused visualization help activate this channel.

Dasa Nadi

Dasa Nadi refers to the ten primary energy channels in the body through which prana (vital life force) flows. These ten nadis are part of a larger network of subtle channels, often said to number in the thousands—ranging from 39 main nadis — ancient texts like the Sivanta Tantra enumerate 350,000 subtle nadis branches in classical texts nadis such as the Yogachudamani Upanishad describes 72 named pranic channels. These energy pathways are integral to the yogic understanding of the subtle-body anatomy, influencing physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Each of the ten nadis corresponds to different aspects of human experience, and their proper functioning is essential for maintaining balance and health.

In yogic practices, the activation and balancing of Dasa Nadi through techniques like pranayama, meditation, and asana can enhance energy flow, improve physical vitality, and elevate mental clarity. By harmonizing these channels, practitioners can experience a deeper connection to their inner energy and cultivate greater spiritual awareness.
